Musician

Shiloh Baptist Church Waukegan is one of the oldest Baptist churches on Lake County’s north shore. We are currently seeking an assistant director of music to join our Music Department, serving as the church’s primary pianist and providing assistance to the church’s director of music.

The musician we are looking for will facilitate an atmosphere in which God is worshipped and glorified. This part-time position reports directly to the director of music. S/he will aid the director of music in overseeing the music ministry. The ideal candidate will have the ability to encourage and lead the congregation, support the director of music in facilitating an atmosphere of participation among congregants. The ideal candidate has a diverse musical background, with knowledge of traditional Baptist hymns as well as contemporary gospel. The person selected for this position joins Shiloh Baptist Church at a time of development and growth. As such, s/he has an opportunity to help in the growth and expansion of the church’s ministry. As the church strives to be a light in the surrounding community, the musician will need to be able to understand the vision of the pastor. She/he must also follow the director of music’s lead in executing that vision and be willing and able to support both. The ability to work with individuals of all ages, including children and youth, will be necessary as the church attempts to reach younger individuals and facilitate their spiritual growth and development. The ideal candidate would be able to lead the music department in the absence of the director of music. This position has great opportunities for growth and honing musical skills. As the church strives to be a light in the surrounding community, the musician will need to be able to understand the vision of the pastor and be willing and able to support this vision. The ability to work with individuals of all ages, including children and youth, will be necessary as the church attempts to reach younger individuals and facilitate their spiritual growth and development. 

Primary Duties – the assistant director of music aids the director of music in fulfilling the responsibilities of the music department. Under the supervision of the director of music She/He:

  • Provides piano accompaniment for Sunday morning worship services, as well as services where the Pastor is the invited speaker at an area church.

  • Assists in directing a volunteer choir and aids in running weekly rehearsals.

  • With the director of music, shares responsibility of playing for funerals, weddings, etc. of church members.

  • Provides piano accompaniment for all church-related engagements.

  • Aids in the coordination and planning the music for holidays and special worship events (e.g. Christmas, Easter children’s cantatas, special performances).

  • Administrative tasks such as maintaining musical library, keeping log of maintenance of musical instruments and assisting in maintenance scheduling, etc. are the primary responsibility of the director of music. When assigned, the assistant director helps with these tasks.

  • Show a commitment to the church’s mission – Together, growing the body of Christ. The ideal candidate is someone whose daily walk and deportment aligns with this mission and the church’s overall goal of glorifying God.

The person hired in this position must remain cognizant of the range of musical preparation of the voluntary members of the choir and is supportive of both the musically trained and untrained.

Qualifications and Requirements

  1. Demonstrated experience in choral or instrumental conducting in a church or school setting is required.

  2. Must exhibit a high level of professionalism and proficiency in many kinds of music and performance.

  3. Ability to work cooperatively to meet goals with the church staff and members of other teams and committees.

  4. Demonstrated proficiency piano accompaniment. Ability to play organ a plus.

  5. Familiarity with Protestant Service, worship music and hymnody.

  6. Willingness to explore different forms of music for use in worship service.

  7. Strong organizational skills and time management

  8. Must have self-awareness, willing to improve areas where weak. Must be able to thrive under the constructive criticism of church leadership by whom he/she will be evaluated annually.

  9. Requires passing criminal, drug and sexual misconduct background checks. Salary commensurate with duties and experience

Church Clerk

Shiloh Baptist Church Waukegan on Lake County’s north shore is currently seeking an Office Clerk with the following skills and availability.

Position: Church Clerk – Hourly

Core Hours Tuesday - Thursday, 9 AM to 2 PM

Organizational Relationship: Directly Responsible to the Church Office ManagerGeneral Duties

Receptionist:
- Greet visitors/members                   
- Answer telephone, take messages and make necessary contacts                        
- Receive deliveries and notify contact person                        
- Maintain the accuracy of the Church Calendar


Clerical:  
- Type letters, announcements, memos and reports as directed by the Office Manager
- File, collate and duplicate material
- Operate copy machine, scanner, computer and other office equipment
- Print Givers’ Envelopes
- Enter new member data, update and maintain CDM+ data base
- Enter room reservations into CDM+ and post weekly calendar of events on Board
- Notify requestors of conflicts or issues with room requests
- Prepare the Church Bulletin as a finished product for Sunday Worship
- Print address labels and mail bulletin to the sick and shut-in and college students
- In the absence of Office Manager, Records minutes of each business meeting and/or special call meetings 
-Transcribe and produce copies for upcoming business meetings along with agenda for each meeting     
- Recommendations for respective agendas will be provided by the Office Manager
- During scheduled work hours, reads Shiloh Baptist Church resolutions and out of town church resolutions at
 funerals for families of deceased Shiloh Church members. Ensure the Pastor and Office Manager signature is affixed to the resolution, that a copy is place in file and that the bereaved family receives the original Resolution. Preparation of resolutions will be accomplished by the Office Manager and presented to the  Church Clerk for presentation.
- Post a schedule for use of gym


Miscellaneous:
- Responsible for mail distribution
- Post items on the bulletin board in the vestibule
- Assist members in whatever way necessary
- Posting of signage for directions throughout the building
- Secure schedule of events Directory
- Maintain building access codes and software
- Assign and delete access codes as instructed by Office Manager
- Open necessary rooms and other areas based on working schedule
- Open and close building—turn alarm off and on based on working schedule
- Have available the list of vendors prepared by the Facility Manager for both janitorial and maintenance areas
